Jordan Peele's Us opens to a monster $70 million — the biggest debut ever for an original live-action picture, ahead of Captain Marvel's $35 million third weekend and Wonder Park's $9 million — and Sonny walks through it in full spoilers, from the 1986 prelude with the Hands Across America ad and the Goonies and C.H.U.D. tapes on the shelf to the reveal that Lupita Nyong'o's Adelaide has been the swapped-in double all along. Sonny likes it as "a very effective comedy movie with horror elements," praising Winston Duke and Tim Heidecker while conceding the mythology collapses under ten seconds of thought: nobody explains where the tethers get their clothes, how the underground economy works, or why a mother who survived that hall of mirrors would ever return to Santa Cruz. Vic agrees it's entertaining and gives it a B+, but says it "totally lacked teeth" as horror, and he regrets going down the rabbit hole of think pieces about W.E.B. Du Bois and double consciousness afterward. Sonny00:04:05rib cage yeah it's good i it feels better this week i can't remember if we talked about this last week but i ran i ran into i it's like the most middle-aged injury that i've ever suffered i was chasing my daughter around the house you know playing playing a game and i ran into one of those like swinging gates but i didn't run into it in the way it swings i ran into it kind of perpendicular to it and i thought i had broken a rib i thought i i thought i like it knocked the wind out of me i thought i'd straight up cracked a rib is your wife beating you no i walked into a door i walked into a door last night uh uh and it was it like a day later it felt fine it felt fine i actually like went to the gym looked out and and then like three or four days later it was just agonizingly painful like i couldn't bend down to tie my shoes i couldn't like bend down to pick things up i was it got to the point where when i was taking deep breaths it actually hurt uh but it feels better now feels better so it's whatever whatever it was okay whatever it was it wasn't it means it was not a broken it was probably not a broken room maybe a bruised rib maybe like a sprained muscle in the rib cage you're breathing you're breathing fine now i'm i mean i'm breathing as well as i you're still coughing up blood or no more uh well the peeing the blood in the urine has stopped so that's okay that's good you that's good to know good uh but yeah no i feel i feel better i feel better um that's uh was there anything else on your mind no i well i just wanted to give uh we're not going to talk about it this week uh we probably won't talk about it next week but i just wanted to give a quick shout out to a movie called dragged across concrete which i reviewed last week in conjunction with us which we will be talking about this week um and i like a lot it's the best movie i've seen so far this year it's from s craig zahler who is uh kind of a he's an indie filmmaker who is best known for two relatively spectacularly brutal movies called uh one is bone tomahawk which is a western horror film and the other is brawl and cell block 99 which is the vince vaughn movie which is about a guy who uh goes to prison because it's i it does i'm not going to explain the whole plot but it these are both like kind of noted noted reactionary films uh the the villain the villain in brawl and cell block 99 is a hispanic drug lord who hires a korean abortionist to uh forcibly abort vince vaughn's child if vince vaughn does not do the things that he wants oh uh so a the in in and bone tomahawk the very dark villains are the villains are these uh a cannibalistic like subhuman uh native american tribe there's a there's a native character that i'm sorry haven't they suffered enough well this is why this is uh these these films are very much uh in in the kind of throwback and dragged across concrete is also problematic so dragged across concrete stars mel gibson uh and vince vaughn as okay that's a great duo cops as cops who get arrested for uh physically abusing a minority suspect allegedly or they get they get the well not really i mean the the so they those are two of the main characters there's another main character who is not in any of the advertising and is getting kind of downplayed in the uh the the reviews of the film who's a he's an african american ex-con who is out of prison and he's he's uh part of this heist that mel gibson and vince vaughn then decide they want to rip off so it's it's there's there's it's like varying shades of bad basically anyway the movie's extremely good uh and it is it is again quite reactionary uh don johnson plays a character in the film he plays lieutenant calvert who has a whole rant about pc culture and how the worst thing you can be called these days is a racist even if it's not true and it's fantastic it's just fantastically amusingly uh reactionary so i i highly recommend it it's on vod now it's playing at a few theaters around i actually i watched a screener link and then i went to go see it in a theater it's playing in one theater in the region it's playing at the arclight bethesda so i went up to the arclight bethesda for the first time very nice well i i

Vic00:10:05it's right up there with haynes point and uh people who aren't golf people can you explain what this is tpc tpc is a is a corporate chain of golf courses supposedly some of them are public uh but uh the really great ones obviously are private like tpc sawgrass where they just had uh the tournament uh the other weekend and uh tpc tpc stands for the players championship yeah i think so i forget what the c is but definitely the yeah something like that and uh so there's tpc sawgrass and then up here there's tpc potomac so it is a pro level uh course 18 holes designed by um master architects and golf players it's not a mini golf course no it's not no no it's not johnny and uh then in fact in june they're playing the quick and loons tournament there so i got to play on the course where uh in june i'll get to see the same players uh actually play golf there like real people as opposed to what i did which was murdered my way through 18 holes what t's did you hit off oh a silver so in the middle i would the old person t's no no i think that's like middle okay old is all the way i think in the front old might be in front of ladies in front of ladies tournament players club thank you tournament tournament players club and uh the back dan was listening to that whole thing i know driving saying sorry about it i forgot what's wrong with course championship uh so i was glad that we didn't go from all the way back because i would have been basically driving from uh that t to the ladies t that would be my first shot and then from there uh it was a brutal brutal course how long are you

Vic00:11:53you drive the ball i would say on average okay not counting uh last sunday between short 150 to 200 i'm not i'm missing something in my swing that's pretty good it's okay it depends uh this was more like 150 if you're more like 100 150 on sunday if you're hitting off the ladies t's it's fine yeah it's uh it's uh the worst part is like oh you know and it's great and i brought my uh father-in-law uh dr uh dr bob dwyer and uh the other person our fourth son was dan's friend dr ed who's chief vascular surgeon at washington med star so really it was a very accomplished foursome yeah two doctors and a doctor's son at the top of their game question for people did you did you

Vic00:12:45case anything happened to me vascularly or urologically that i was good for 18 holes uh and but they were very nice and very patient uh with me also in my defense the course was being aerated so it wasn't this well that's the problem that's why but i did one highlight and it was one was sinking what uh dr wu said was about a 70 foot putt it was very far that's a good putt yeah and and then it was all downhill from there the i was going to say this uh jayville the worst was you know oh you get it there's it's all gps so it tells you how many yards you're away based on your cart but it's cart path only so you have to leave and that means me walking all the way across the course to the woods or wherever and uh then but then you would get to like a par three oh thank goodness it's a par three and it's like 200 yards for the par three and what i really wanted to do is like take my driver but you know i did what what are you hitting off a three 200 yard par three are you is it your three iron i'm using a five wood and i was obsessed with it because i i was so bad could you reach with a five wood from there no and i was so bad with a five wood but i was obsessed with finally trying to get it trying to get it finally in the drink before you got um i put i put a few in i lost all my balls by the end i was borrowing my father-in-law

Vic00:15:10was not uh keeping score i was i think there were a couple holes that i got a double bogey on and i was pleased about that they're all i'm sure if dan's listening now he's like that's totally not true maybe one hole uh was and uh but what did the other guys in your foursome shoot they were oh here's an interesting thing they made it so comfortable for us that a lot of the times they said you know this is march this is like a time to get out all the kinks so they were taking a lot of mulligans too like oh i'm just gonna take you know maybe three shots to get on the gate so it was totally relaxed and casual and then we get to the ninth hole and then uh you know dr boo gets on the phone like oh what do you guys want for lunch anything you know whatever you want and i'm like well what do they you know my father-in-law is like uh do they have a turkey sandwich you know and he's like of course they haven't uh what kind of bread do you want the bread toasted i mean it was everything and then they come over in the cart with you know it was the greenest lettuce i've ever seen and and the fries were great and then of course you know i

Sonny00:19:49worked at a country club did you fredericksburg country club i did what did you do there sonny i but we they it did not it's it's a small enough club that it didn't really have caddies it was but i was like shagging balls off the driving range and cleaning carts and you know making sure shagging ball there's a great quote for you clubs making sure clubs were clean that's in in that sort of thing uh and it was actually it was actually a really solid job because like there was not a ton of interaction with the members and the ones who did interact with us were generally pretty nice like it was like local judges and stuff you know like like very very friendly very friendly
JVL00:20:23so i this is where i learned to love the overclass well there was there was a moment i remember at uh at country well when i said to one of the uh to one of the members as we were wrapping up and he had shot like a 137 and oh my score was like really you know of course the people who shoot the highest scores are always the ones who are the most fastidious about everything as if oh god i might get a 138 if i don't die right i said to him there's a storm coming

Vic00:20:59uh my father never belonged to a country club he still prefers the public course that's because he's a man of the people he's a doctor of the people and he doesn't mind getting paired up i mean you know how they say oh you're going to be joined by somebody it's him you know like if you have like if you're a threesome oh you're gonna be somebody's gonna join it's usually him uh he for some reason just prefers the public course um but anyway i just want to say uh again thank you to dan uh who is extremely generous and kind as always as you know um and also uh dr ed woo very nice very kind i felt like i had a lot in common with him uh because dr woo i will be seeing you in 15 years for my cabbage i'll be yeah i'll yes that's right i'll see him in five years uh and we'll see you in five years yes and and and so uh he is obviously he is asian-american i'm asian-american he grew up in new jersey i grew up in new jersey he's from and he went to uh uh penn you penn and he was there for many years and of course now he's a uh the the head uh cardiovascular surgeon and i'm uh a future patient i'm future patient i don't think they can afford it no i don't think i'm really quite like him i guess you could say i'm more like his evil twin speaking of evil twins over the weekend oh us us a plus plus thank you us sliced its way to the top of the box office with 70 million followed by captain mark marvel with 35 million and in third place wonder park with 9 million gentlemen box office thoughts

Sonny00:23:52oh i find i find it hard to believe that this won't gross 170 million dollars despite domestically but get out get get out was a was a slow burn i mean it it only grossed only i mean it grossed 33 million dollars its opening weekend which is a big number for a movie that cost five million bucks to make from a first-time director with no real stars i mean and and then after that it was it had drops of 15 percent 26 percent 35 percent 34 percent so it held for a long time it had a us is going to be uh i would be i mean it's starting so high i i have a hard time believing it's going to be better than three but a multiple of three on an r-rated horror film is very good and a multiple of three on a 70 million dollar film is a 70 million dollar opening is extremely good uh it's going to gross you know let's say it grosses between 200 and 225 million dollars it means it made 10 times its budget back um is that good it's good that's good uh so

Sonny00:27:38i'm very concerned it's funny i was i was doing my kind of standard tweeting about the box office this weekend and noted that captain marvel is not holding particularly well it's not holding poorly exactly it dropped 55 percent which is about which is on the high end of the marvel movies but not not outrageously so and it dropped another 50 this weekend um you compare that to wonder woman or black panther or these other kind of real phenomenons aquaman aquaman god help us well aquaman aquaman made most of its money or it held pretty well aquaman held well aqua i you know my theory on aquaman that aquaman was filling the star wars spot yes from this december because star wars foolishly released a movie in may and that's right december that's right so aquaman was just absorbing that that christmas season blockbuster energy uh so i i you know i'm not i i but it's it's not it's not holding particularly well it's not holding particularly terribly it's just having kind of average drops and i you know the reason for this is that it's not particularly good and people were just angry at me oh i bet how dare you too many white men going to movies how dare you suggest that this movie is not good how dare you suggest it's not the biggest success ever like it's i mean it's making a ton of money it's gonna make a billion dollars like

Sonny00:29:38sonny how about a real review okay so us is the latest film from jordan peele as we just discussed uh it is about a family that goes on vacation to the beach uh but before we get to that there's a prelude of sorts where where it's 1986 and the this girl is watching a hands across america ad right now on a on a if you if you pay attention to the the movie it is filled with these little easter eggs because jordan peele is very much kind of a nerd who likes to have his little references so the the hands across america ad is playing on you know kind of an old school tube tv uh as one would expect in 1986 and on the shelf next to the tv there are vhs tapes one of which is goonies one chud uh chuds chud or chuds the cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers uh which is which is a which is kind of both of these films are kind of a hint as to what is coming um there's a we're going underground we're going underground here folks uh so anyway uh starts off as a this prelude in the 1980s this girl goes to a a boardwalk amusement park and is gets separated from her parents wanders into a hall of mirrors sees herself but it's not a reflection it's her uh and then we cut we cut into the future i'm sorry it's not a reflection it's her it's not a reflection it's her what does that mean it's the it's like her she's it's like a double you know it's not a mirror it's not a mirror it's not a mirror it's like it's her actual the girl the girl there's two versions there's two of the girls in the in the room uh so the we cut it we cut forward to present day the this girl has grown up her family is headed back to the santa cruz beach that's where it was and they she doesn't want to go down to the beach she still has kind of some lingering trauma over whatever happened to her in that hall of mirrors uh and her family kind of guilts her into it they go to the beach they're hanging out with their annoyingly wealthy white friends uh played wonderfully by tim heidecker and elizabeth moss i'm a huge fan of tim heidecker just in general and i'm glad that he is given something really to do here usually in movies he is a little more than a bit player who people are like hey look it's tim heidecker uh but tim heidecker is a uh he he is for the last i don't know 15 or 20 years been kind of this weird dadaist comedian on the cartoon network there's a show called tim and tim and eric awesome show great job very weird very funny uh if you're into that sort of thing anyway so uh the the family then goes home uh the the african-american family goes home they they uh are settling down for the night and uh another family shows up in their driveway a family doubles and we this is this is when the horror starts there's uh there's some there's some there's some there's some tormenting of the family they put them all in a room and the the uh i'm trying to remember what the character's name is adelaide her double uh it was played by lupita niango both both characters lupita niango is she the oldest daughter is she the wife what what is lupita niango is the the girl grown old the girl from the original she's now the
JVL00:32:52mother she's now the mother of the family she's the mother understood um uh talks to the doubles
Sonny00:32:58and they're like what are you doing why are you doing this who are you and the double lupita responds we're americans so here's the this is they're all dressed in like prison garb they're dressed in like prison overalls they all are like uh they've they've been forced to live underground and as as trolls and they're eating cold rabbit meat for their meals and they're given toys that them and it's like it's this the the metaphor of this movie is that the underclass is going to come up and uh and murder the the overclass this is why i think you would have really enjoyed the film JVL in addition to it being funny and it is funny it is legitimately funny throughout i haven't really talked about we'll get to that the humor the humor in the film and it is it is funny it is funny throughout winston duke is very funny uh tim heidecker again very funny elizabeth moss doesn't do a ton for me but she's okay here um their movie is very funny it is very much about class warfare this is not a movie about race in the way that get out was i don't think um this is much more about class uh struggle um to the point that should we can we go full spoilers here okay spoilers we're gonna go full spoilers i i can't have a conversation if you don't we all we always go full spoilers so it turns out that the girl from the underground uh kidnapped the the the girl from the overground and chained her up downstairs in the underground basement evil you know lair where all these doubles hang out uh and came up herself and she she is living with the family so the family so she is the mother she so the mother the mother in that we have we have watched throughout is
JVL00:34:44actually the evil double they pulled the switcheroo so she shouldn't be surprised by any of this
Sonny00:34:49well yes so we'll get we'll get to this in a second uh so she pulls the switcheroo and the the girl who had lived in the aboveground and who had lived in the world of comfort and luxury uh is now forced to live amongst the tormented underclass and she throws off their blinders and destroys their false consciousness and leads them up in a rebellion against the the the overclasses it's very much it's it's very very marxist and it's very much uh a reminder that the the uh you know revolutions always come from the wealthy basically led by the wealthy against other wealthy people anyway uh so this is the the problem with the movie is that none of this makes any sense really yeah i have a lot of questions i'll ask later none of this makes any sense that there's no explanation really for what the doubles are uh they're called tethers in this film there's some there's some they share a soul because they share a soul well that's what they say but like how does that work exactly there there's some suggestion that there was a there was an experiment a cloning experiment that they could create the the body but not the soul and they share the soul and they're when they're underground they're doing all the same things as the people above ground just kind of in pantomime and it's it's whatever it it doesn't make any sense it doesn't actually if you give it 10 seconds of thought the whole movie falls down for reasons like shouldn't the mother have known about this awful underground horror society right that she has condemned her seven year previous seven-year-old self to and maybe maybe she would uh avoid going back to that area at all ever and you never do it
Vic00:36:31there's there's truth in the bumper stickers keep Santa Cruz weird yeah and there you go uh and
Sonny00:36:37I mean like so there's there's there's that problem there there's just the fact that none of it really makes any sense as a fable as kind of a horror fable about the um the ways that we experience poverty and suffering around us I think it's pretty effective I think it's more or less effective um but you know your mileage may vary on this sort of thing so in the end did you like it I did I did I actually did I thought again I thought it's a very effective comedy movie with horror elements okay um it is it is it is it it sacrifices scares for laughs which are friends of mine who are very much horror buffs were annoyed by this movie they were like well you know that is not what the trailer promised I know that it's very different absolutely very different from the trailer horror buff friends of mine were annoyed by the film because it it sacrifices scares and suspense and tension for jokes it will it will it Jordan Peele is always happy to in this film at least is is very happy to uh trade a uh trade actual suspense for a quick laugh which is fine I I like it some people don't um and this is why I was I was not just trolling I'm dead serious that you you would have been scared probably because it is it it does have it is a scary movie but it is it is very it's very funny it is not the it is not the horror the horrifying experience that is promised from the trailer no I I agree with

Vic00:40:15are you persuaded now to watch the movie hard pass what did your children think of it Victorino thought there were parts that were kind of scary but kind of funny too also what's with the scissors she said no I didn't I went alone uh but uh it was a crowded theater and there were a lot of laughs in that theater and I again as Sonny mentioned I thought that Winston Duke kind of stole the show I mean he was very funny so I mean it's like it's meant to be disturbing but I think it was that disturbing and uh not as scary as early on I'm bracing for it and it paces well in the very beginning when she walks into the hall of mirrors in that scary place and for those of us who are familiar with boardwalks there you know the boardwalk is fun but it's also creepy but it's also creepy because no it's no offense to the people who you know I'm not gonna say I'm not comparing the carnies yeah it's a different world it's a different world is what I'm saying and uh I mean for some people it's a summer job uh a lot of my friends but you know other aspects of it are kind of like with the people who operate the machines you know and those weird scary houses uh if you remember the haunted house bringing Dean Castle oh you can't you go to YouTube and type in Brigham could not pay me oh no I'm to this day to this day and it horrified me and they played box to Cotta right right on the commercial and it was scary because it was humans it's not a rope it's humans it's humans in there who are going to scare you and my sister told me that they chase you into the parking lot it could be true but the commercial was great because there was always a very bouncy woman running out running around like with her pink t-shirt and I thought that was very funny but it was and they're like oh you have to kill them with like a drive a stake through the vampire's heart I mean really crazy stuff go on to YouTube and just type in Brigantine Castle how do you spell that Brigantine B-R-I

Vic00:42:16are two there are two there were two uh scary castles on the on the Jersey Shore one was Brigantine don't forget the other one the castle at Long Branch oh that's right the castle see that was outside of my sphere of influence that's up there and one of them I think was that was your home castle yes and of course there was the haunted house uh the famous infamous on haunted house great adventure that burned down and people died killed like 30 people yeah because they had the fake exit signs much like in uh there's a fake I think she thinks she sees the uh the exit sign she walks into a mirror exactly she sees it in a mirror you can imagine that in reality how much of that is uh in case there's a fire and there was but I remember uh friends who had gone in before the fire and they said you know what I said so what happens he said well you know some guy will like you know fill you up yeah no that's what it is they dip their hands in ice cold water to scare you and then I grab but it's dark so I I guess I accidentally grabbed a boob or a butt cheek and you do that and you get paid yeah and you get paid to do that all day yeah and then die did you like it yeah I give it a b plus but here's the thing so I said oh this was kind of an entertaining movie I have a ton of questions that make it weird once you start up you know thinking about it as you said Sonny the whole thing falls apart is it more along the black

Sonny00:45:10this myself given the per capita gun ownership in America the idea that a bunch of scissor wielding they only had scissors scissor wielding maniacs would be able to emerge from the tunnels underneath our streets and uh kill large numbers of people strikes me as well I mean they would probably they'd certainly be able to kill some people but they're all wearing the same thing so as soon as you see uh these guys wandering around the streets with their their their scissors run you just you you could really just start shooting question yes what is their goal their goal their motivation is to what their goal is to create or raise awareness so this it starts with a hands across america a commercial right and the the knock on hands across america is that it's this it's this thing to raise awareness for homelessness in america right but it was nonsense it didn't actually do anything it was silly um and at quaker school don't tell us that yeah man it was a big deal so like but this this idea of raising awareness so when the when the when the tethers when the doubles come up from the underground they kill a bunch of people and then they start their own hands across america chain and this is actually kind of clever because you know you know what isn't going to change anything is holding hands across america you know what might change some things is murdering a bunch of people and then holding hands across america it's like it it is very much it is very much this is

Sonny00:47:04do they have superhuman strength or speed unclear a well they they seem to be like us but somewhat better i don't know it's hard minus they have no verbal skills yeah they they can't talk the only one who talks is uh the girl the who who went they can't talk they just make moaning noises and grunt like zombies can they be killed yes yes how how must they be killed they just die like humans but but it takes several attempts it's not definitely definitely seems stronger than than normal humans yes but they they can be killed what one one another weakness with this movie and this is also true of get out is that jordan peels seems very reluctant to kill anyone who we like yeah i appreciate that

JVL00:55:58have an age adjusted ranking okay so i'm ranking them basically on how scared i was at the time of my life when i've seen them and so for me and i i would say i realized something midway through making this list i realized what was going on and you guys will probably pick up on it yourselves uh for me the scariest movie ever was bambi i saw it when i was five my parents were still together and it opens with a mother being murdered by sunny's face and and the hunters are combing the woods in an attempt to exterminate bambi's entire line and i just found that effing terrifying number two halloween i was in fifth grade i was going to a school called haddonfield friends okay number three faces of death at that point i was in seventh grade and i had just i had just left quaker school for the public schools who rented it well this is what chris no no but this was what all the savages in the public school were talking about and so like my first experience with mass culture of like the public school proletarians were these kids who were all like you know gotta see it gotta see it gotta see it and i and this is what and they loved it and i found it terrifying that this is what i was like i am not like these animals were they okay um number four stepfather i was in eighth grade at that point my parents had split up and it was a story of this psychopath who goes around marrying single mothers and then murdering them and their children oh uh and then number five is misery at which point i was in 11th grade there's this controlling older woman who uses a sledgehammer to keep a writer from escaping her house and all of these movies are actually about my family life and this is i'm this isn't shtick like all of the what scared the crap out of me in every one of these sequences was that they were really about the things i was experiencing in my terrible home um and so i this is this is why i don't do scary movies like i had a lousy enough childhood i don't
Vic00:57:54need i don't need to like go and pay somebody money to scare me you just turned this into a very special episode no i didn't i didn't mean to but this is anyway so i bet i know what your scariest movie is though i don't want to i don't want to blow up but when you get to number one let me guess number one for you uh okay uh five salem's lot uh was that a tv movie the toby movie the one yeah i it's the one where the kid is scratching the glass on the wall you let me back in and the you know it's the town of vampires right i mean it's down king so i saw them when i was young and it's scary i just i just think that's scary uh number four nightmare on elm street um the the first death i think is tina and then you see her reappear only to the girl and she's in a body bag and that was kind of like a novel i didn't was not familiar with body bag really until like that movie and it's the transparent body i mean it's just disturbing and then johnny depp's death i i really like johnny depp in that movie and so when he died because eventually you're gonna go fall asleep it was horrific i was one of the few times in my life that i actually um yeah that i actually turned away um and then uh the omen right which is very scary uh open water because yeah because i mean that's something you could find yourself in i mean that's very realistic that's a whole

Vic01:01:01really wear especially got gout got gout is brilliant um i just wanted to say a uh a friend tells me uh who is uh well sourced that my favorite one of my favorite burger places that closed down in the northern virginia area i'm not going to name the name because i have been able to prove it i said it's a shame that the place closed down they serve great burgers and he said you know why it closed down it was a front for prostitution right here ollie's trolley no i'm not going to say what it is but excuse me it's not that and i brought my kids there and i thought oh my gosh but you know what i was always trying to figure out uh kate and i were always uh fascinated by the older woman hostess who uh let us in and there was something about her because she was older she was an older lady but she had this way about her and you realize now the way about her is she's a madam you know it's that way and the way she talked and kate said to me where were people doing it you're not going to believe this you're not gonna i don't know but then and kate said i always thought she was nicer to you than me is what she said and i said and they and they and they served uh great burgers i said yeah the the meat temperature was always perfect 98.6 what is
