With Sonny newly relocated to Dallas, CNN's Chris Cillizza fills the empty chair, and the closest thing to a review is his running dispatch from working through the Star Wars prequels for the first time alongside his ten- and seven-year-olds: he pronounces them "remarkably bad," finds Hayden Christensen's acting "inexplicable" while insisting the fault is the material (he liked him in Shattered Glass, which Vic concedes is entirely in their wheelhouse), and still rates Revenge of the Sith the best of the three. He and Vic then pick at it for a while — Padmé dying in childbirth in a galaxy with hyperdrive and, two films later, the power to heal (blame the robotic midwife, which prompts an anti-Andrew Yang automation joke), and Mace Windu's defenestration from Palpatine's condo, after which Anakin goes from "what have I done" to bowing in about one second. Cillizza also confesses he tweeted that it was odd Jar Jar Binks got appointed to fill a Senate opening and was promptly sent down the Darth Jar Jar rabbit hole. On the numbers, Bad Boys for Life holds at $34 million, 1917 takes $16 million, Doolittle $12 million and Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen $10.7 million; JVL notes Doolittle cost roughly $180 million against a $44 million domestic cume and will be a $100 million write-down, and they deliberately shelve The Gentlemen for next week because a certain listener in Dallas is chomping at the bit. Vic also declares 2001: A Space Odyssey a total quadrant failure — F on plot, F on nudity except for the apes, less violence than Space Camp — while JVL insists you can get 85% of it from YouTube clips. The front half is all Georgetown, with a "Hoya Hangouts" quiz in which Cillizza takes Clyde's, Darnall, the establishment Hoya, Champions on a Thursday, and the nursing school over Ling Ling, admits he landed in the College because he couldn't crack the School of Foreign Service, and tells the story of classmate Jonah Nolan filling a Village B suite with sand for a beach party. JVL counters with a quiz Vic fails badly, since the answers all turn out to be Georgetown Visitation. Elsewhere: Cillizza's stomach flu diet (207.6 pounds) and his "bubbling cauldron of rage" as assistant to the assistant fifth-grade basketball coach, JVL's son Flash plotting to tank Little League tryouts so he gets drafted low enough to land on his buddy Kenny's team, Vic's Sunday afternoons at the Knights of Columbus bar where nobody asks what he does for a living, and a proposal to retire "I'm sure it's fine" in favor of "congrats."

Guest00:00:00I lost everyone I've ever loved, then they locked me away, with nowhere to hide from the pain
Vic00:00:15hello and welcome to another edition of the subbeacon sponsored by doordash and com i'm victor manis along with jonathan and as always chris eliza just a reminder the subbeacon is available on itunes google play and stitcher look at our podcast and search for subbeacon you'll easily find us please subscribe tell your friends and leave a review gentlemen how are we Chris, how was your weekend? Oh, thanks, Vic. Thanks for asking. I had something that I've been wanting to have for a while now, a very active stomach flu.
JVL00:00:55Yeah. Oh.
Vic00:00:56Terrific. Yes. Nothing like a good-
JVL00:00:58No better way to lose weight. I agree.
Vic00:01:00So, JVL, thank you for noticing that. Yes, I went down to about 207.6, not that I weighed myself, though I did. In the midst of this, it is helpful to not want to eat for several days. Several days. So I had that going. My kids gave it to me. It's always nice. They got over it in like 15 minutes, and it took me four days. But other than that, successful weekend in youth basketball. Team went 2-0, my fifth grader. I'm the assistant to the assistant coach. It mostly involves gathering the balls up to make sure the kids don't dribble them while the real coach is actually coaching. Someone has to do that. That's so true. Do you have to fill with water bottles and stuff too? Is that your job? It's not just fill it. I actually squeeze them into the mouths.
JVL00:01:54During timeouts, do you bring out the stools for the starters to sit on?
Vic00:01:57And then I clean up their sweat afterwards. Oh, that's good. Yeah, I know. It's a job for which I'm uniquely qualified. You're like Dennis Hopper in the Hoosiers. I am. I run the picket fence at them, and then I put in a sanitarium. So that's coming. That part is coming. you're wrong ref yeah ah just out on the court wildly just are you are you allowed to uh be vocal with the players or you you you defer to the coach defend aloud i mean define aloud like there's not a set of hustle move your feet i definitely i don't know JVL you can probably with youth sport you you at least for me i have a bubbling cauldron of rage in me at all times yes and so i do my best to mask it but there are times when it comes out into this guttural roar like pass the ball and then i'm out and then like afterwards my wife would be like you you really really yelled that really wasn't you know and like it's just get on the bag jimmy exactly i've been known in baseball to yell you've got to catch that when my kid drops the ball which is like not when your 10-year-old drops the ball what you really should yell. You should be supportive. You're yelling at your own team and your own kids. You're not yelling at the other kids. You're not yelling at the other kids. No, but it is – I mean, this is fifth-grade basketball, so you think like, oh, it's fifth-grade basketball in northern Virginia. It's not exactly the hotbed of D1 NBA prospects, but youth sports are everything that you have heard about in worse, as you guys know. And so, yeah, I mean, especially with basketball, because unlike soccer or even baseball, where you're outside and voices don't carry as much, it gets lost in the ether. You hear what you hear people say in the stands and to the kids and people. Unfortunately, adults don't always act as they should. So you really have to keep a tight rein up. Again, I was very reduced because of the stomach bug. I was really half of myself, quite literally. Right, no, you don't want to be like, you know, the clenching of the fists of rage is going to be clenching something else. Yeah, there was clenching. There was definitely clenching. You don't want to let loose. You don't want to let loose. Every time I saw it, like the kids would bring in a snack after between games, and I was like, whoop. That's good. Like even the sight of food made you not want to eat. Yeah, I mean, it was a lot like your food poisoning that you had, I think. Oh, with the shrimp? Yeah. Yeah, that was sad. I mean, I'm glad you got over it, but it was similar to that incident. I got way over it. I got way over it. Yeah, well, I just hope it doesn't happen again. well thank you yeah thank you because it is the shrimp well you get a bad shrimp that's it that's it four martinis is one thing but shrimp well it's the shrimp it's the shrimp that'll do it
JVL00:04:42jvl how are you so it's it's funny you bring up youth sports because i don't know how things are for you guys but we are coming up on little league tryouts we are too down in my neck of the world absolutely next early next month and uh flash and i were talking about this because he's stretching
Vic00:05:00his arm out as a friend getting ready for the tommy john well no because he's so he's been
JVL00:05:04voluntary voluntary you know he's he's working out three and now four times a week with his travel team and has been since january and uh so he he he's got a buddy who he really wants to be on the same team as for little league because they go to different schools now they don't get to see each other as much he's like we got to be on the same team but they all draft right it's a draft yeah and his buddy great kid very fine athlete good runner it's only he's just like plays baseball casually this is not he's not a great player he just does it for fun and so flash says to me you know i've been thinking about it dad i think i think i'm just gonna gonna tank the trial oh yeah i said you're you're gonna tank the order to help it was yeah so if i could just show up and look like I don't even remember how to play, then like, you know, I'll be like an eighth round pick and it'll be easier for them to get me and Kenny on the same team together. I said, well, you could drive.
Vic00:06:04What's terrifying to me is that I have had adults tell me to have my son, who is pretty good athlete. My wife was a very good athlete. I was not. But to tank the tryout so that they can pick him lower so that they can have a super team. Yeah. Yeah. Again, just a reminder, they're 10. Right. No, in their mind, it's not yet our mindset of every man for himself, you know. Absolutely. I tell my kid, destroy everything in your path. Leave no, you know, take no prisoners. Throw the first bitch behind a batter. Whatever it takes. Whatever it takes. Victorino, how are you? I am doing fine. I'm happy that I haven't botched anybody's coffee anymore because the last, the Knights columbus breakfast buffet uh that was that was a little bit crazy but i'm getting better at it but you know what's crazy is i i find myself on sunday afternoons just going to the night's um club and just hanging out at the bar with the old with the old guys yeah you're old oh well i am old but that's number one i'm old uh and i but i'm still the youngest one i think at the bar uh you do it to feel young i think so i'm not sure why maybe just to escape my house i don't know but you know When football mattered, when Red Grains played. They made a Jim Thorpe joke the other day. Oh, my God. They did. And my wife is fully supportive because she's a big sort of Charles Murray civics. You know, get involved with your local association. Vic's not bowling alone anymore. No, no. That's exactly right. I could count that in the bubble test now. Oh, I belong to the Knights. And so I hang out with these guys. And I think one of the things is just sitting around the bar on a Sunday afternoon, not for long, just a couple hours, is they don't know who I am or what I do. No one's ever asked. what do you do you know and you just thank god and you don't want to have to tell him oh no that club um but uh you know so you're sitting around and and you can just drink and if you don't feel like talking you don't you just listen because they're always talking is there a smoking lounge there's an ad the the the upstairs you can smoke cigars but that place used to be smoking all the time but even that changed everywhere i don't know if there's anywhere that you but so there's a cigar thing upstairs. I don't go there because I hear it's haunted. But, you know, by the Holy Ghost. But we can only wish.
JVL00:08:23Nice, very nice.
Vic00:08:24But I like it, and I can just sit there, and I think it's because, again, I can just listen. I don't have to hear. You know what I mean? I don't have to talk, and if they ask me questions, we can talk about golf, talk about things that we have in common, and it's just a very civic thing. Does the topic ever, I always wonder this about these, does the topic ever turn to politics, not knowing what you do? Subtly, very subtly. They'll make some jokes. Because it is the D.C. area. I mean, I hate to be stereotypical, but it is true. If you ride on the Metro, you definitely hear people being like, and then in the Ag Committee, I mean, things you wouldn't hear. But at the club, you know, at the club, I mean, these are old guys. I find that a lot of the members are actually, they actually do things for a living, like they're builders. I was going to ask, what are their former professions? I don't know. I don't know what it's like. We don't know what it's like. Firefighters, carpenters, welders. Machinists types. Yeah, absolutely. They do real things like that. Yeah, Vic, what do you do?
JVL00:09:13No, I just, I drink. I write and I drink. Just tell them, oh, I'm unemployed.
Vic00:09:17I made a reference. I'm out of work. I'd rather tell them that. It's the safest choice. I made a reference to having done these cruises for work, and they sort of look at you like, what? What is it that, you know? But then you just sort of glide over that.
JVL00:09:28They might think cruising is different than. They do. You know, different generations.
Vic00:09:32And I'm going to say, but I don't, and I'm not drinking a lot because it's a Sunday, so I'll have like two pints, and then inevitably somebody breaks up, breaks out a bottle of whiskey. Do they have shrimp there? They do, but it's fried. Okay, be careful. It's fried shrimp, which I think is safe. Well, don't overindulge on the shrimp. Yes, yes. No, so I'll have like last Sunday, I had two pints and a shot of whiskey, which is not a lot. Oh, yeah. That's not a lot. So it's very moderate for a Sunday afternoon. The way JVL looks at me is if I have a drinking problem. But speaking of drinking problems, we're now at that weekly segment of ours, Hoya Hangouts. Oh, yeah. I look forward to this every day. And Chris, of course, you're a Georgetown grad. What school were you in? Well, just quickly, one thing. I'm really just, you know, there's been some questions. I'm just very committed to the D.C. area. Uh-huh, sure. You know, I'm not planning to move anywhere. No, no, you're here to stay. Yeah, I like it here. I'm committed to you guys, the show. Yeah, you would never think of going, like, to Texas or anything. No, I mean, because think about it. There's only the three of us. So if I left, it'd be like taking a third of the show. I mean, it's just a selfish thing I wouldn't do. But, okay, so you were asking what school am I in. Yeah, yeah, yeah, what school you were in. I went to the College of Arts and Sciences. Oh, yes. Mostly because I couldn't get into the School of Foreign Service. Thank you. You're very kind. He really knows how to. He really knows how to. Well, Vic, you and I have known each other for a long time. We do this every week. Yeah, we do. As you know.
JVL00:10:49Are you allowed to apply to multiple schools? You are not.
Vic00:10:51Did you try? No.
JVL00:10:53Maybe that's why. No, that's what I'm saying. I was wondering if maybe the problem was I was supposed to apply to multiple schools.
Vic00:10:59No, you pick one. You know, the college is now the hardest school to get into now. I applied to arts and sciences. Is that true? It's much harder than foreign service. What? A lot more kids and they don't know what they want to do. So when I was there, the easiest route in was the business school, followed by the college, followed by. What about nursing? Oh, right. And Ling Ling. Nursing is really like specialized. Specialized. I guess you could transfer out. Language and linguistics. You could do that. And that's gone now, too. But the school. You know so much about this. Very impressive, JVL. But the School of Foreign Service was the pinnacle. But it was also populated by people, many of whom are currently in office, but many people who wanted to run for office. That is true. That is true. I believe class of 92 is Hunter Biden. Yes, that is right. That was before my time, Vic. Oh, yeah, yeah. No, you were 90. I'm 95. 98. Yes. And look how both successful we are now. Well, I don't, yeah. Sure, JVL's not saying anything. Question, question, question. JVL fell over. You're class of 98. You know who else was? Jonathan Nolan. Did you know him? Jonah Nolan. Yes, brother of Christopher Nolan. Excuse me. Yes. great factoid about Jonah Nolan. Now, I did not know him well, but I knew one of his friends quite well. He was in a number of my classes, Liam Kenney, awesome dude, nothing like me. When I say was in my classes, I believe he majored in the same thing I did, English. He did not see to attend a class very often. And the thing that he and Jonah were best known for was we lived in dormitory housing. Nice dormitory housing as a sophomore, but dormitory housing. It's like four floors, quad. And they held a party in the spring, right before the end of the school year. They held a party in the spring in which they brought in a significant amount of sand. It was a beach party. A beach party? Into their dorm. Like, it wasn't just a room. It was a suite, I guess. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Which building? Village B. Oh, yeah, of course. I can get you sand at cost. I got a sand guy. I lived at Village B. So they brought it in and had a huge – I mean, like, I think they filled the entire apartment with it. And I believe were either suspended from school for the start of the next year or faced some serious – Point is, you don't need to really do well in college, kids, because Jonah Nolan has more money than me, certainly. And I went to every class, summa cum laude. Come get me. I was not him. Oh, you do? Okay. I was not. I did not get it. I spent a lot of time in what was at the time the Mexican Cafe, which is now closed. Yes, it's closed. That's now Pizzeria Paradiso. Okay. Well, it's the best pizza. Okay. You ready for the Q&A? I thought that was the Q&A. No, this is it. This is it. Well, you guys already know so much about me. I know. Okay. Here we go. You have to choose. Clyde's or J. Paul's? Neither. I mean, it's the same place. They're both Clydes. I suppose Clydes. Clydes, okay. The J. Paul's seafood window does not entice me. Where do you see the oyster? Same seafood has been there. The shark oyster is right there waiting for you. No, thank you. Okay, okay. No. Darnell or New South Cafeteria? Oh, okay, great question. Darnell, obviously. I, when I was the last or second to last class to be, this is the most niche podcast of all time. JVL, do you need the tissue box? He just doesn't care. I see the eyes. St. Mary's was where I lived my freshman year. Oh, my condolences. They condemned the building shortly thereafter. But because St. Mary's is right next to Darnell, we would eat at Darnell all the time. Yes. Darnell, I heard. I'm not walking across campus to New South. Am I an animal? New South is where the action was. I could spend three hours there. Very social. The food was terrible. I heard the food was better at Darnell, but a lot of action. Very social. New South. Okay. The Hoyer, The Voice. I didn't write for either, but I was more of an establishment Hoya guy. The voice was the alternative publication. Yes. The Hoya didn't see fit to be interested in my journalistic abilities. They were like, you know, it's very clubby. These high school, these college newspapers, it's very insular. They do not like outsiders. No, that's true. And I was like, I don't know.
JVL00:15:20I just want to write about sports and stuff.
Vic00:15:22It's like your book committee. They did not. Not interested in me. It's a mafia. Eat it, all of you people. Third edition or champions? Oh, my gosh. Champions, obviously. Thursday night, champions. I was not – I know, and JVL is going to be surprised by this, and I'm sure listeners will be, but I was not super cool in college. You're suggesting third edition was where super cool was? Very void-like. Well, also champions. It's where everyone went, but so I tried to glom onto the cool kids by going to champions. They would clear out all the tables in that classy establishment in an alley and just allow you to dance in there. I believe Champions is closed, if I'm not mistaken. It's a different bar now. And 3rd Edition used to have Tiki. They're both gone. The Tiki was in the backyard. The Tiki Lounge, when they had a talking parrot. And that was St. Elmo's Fire, because that was St. Elmo's Fire famous. Honestly, can I tell you what I remember most about 3rd Edition? There would be all of our female friends would go there, And there would be a lot of what I now realize were people, guys, probably my age now, 43, hanging out there trying to hit on the college girls. It was a dark, depressing scene. That was like five years ago for me. It wasn't. It wasn't. I didn't know they were in call. I thought that the graduate school does not count. Graduate school does not count. JVL, Georgetown question. Burleith basement or fourth floor St. Mary's?
JVL00:16:47Yeah. You know the sad thing? is that I have actual answers to every single one of the questions you asked.
Vic00:16:54Really, you did? Like, been to Champions and 3rd Edition. Okay, but which did you like best? I mean, 3rd Edition was a little bit more refined. I prefer 3rd Edition. Fine. I will type my answers.
JVL00:17:03I was going to say New South because I'd been to both for food on my college tours.
Vic00:17:07Look, New South is nice. In terms of, like, what the food that you can get, New South is clearly better. But Darnell, in terms of ease of use, for me as a freshman in college, I went to Weissmiller's every single day.
JVL00:17:20Me too. I'm just telling you that I know exactly what you two assholes are talking about. On every one of them, I know what you're talking about.
Vic00:17:25I used to eat a Burger Madness at Weissmiller's every single day. There's a minimum of 5,000 calories in it. Because it's like a giant cheeseburger, and they chop it up into a round piece. Two giant cheeseburgers. Into a sub. Fantastic. I want to get that right now. I'd love that right now. Okay, last question. By the way, St. Mary's Fourth Floor is the answer to that big question, because that's where they had the dial-up internet my freshman year of college. That was the only place you could get ahead of it. Log on to GU, son. Thank you. That was the only floor that had air conditioning, but the people who lived there were people who could not live with other people. They were single. It would be like a junior who didn't have any friends. That's right. The one who kept on saying, all my housemates are crazy every year. And you're like, wait a minute. Really into hot yoga. Yeah, I was at St. Mary's Fourth Floor for a summer while I was doing an internship. You know who else was on that floor with me? Moa Lethe. Oh, Moa Lethe. Love him. Went to his wedding at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria many moons ago. Good wedding. Many moons ago. Okay, last question for you. Nursing school or Ling Lang? Which had the cooler girls? Nursing school. My college love, whose name I will not say on air because she would never want to be associated with me, was a nursing student. Loved her. She was the best. Boston, went to Boston Latin School. Great. Lovely person. Now is married to a guy we went to college with. Has three kids, I think. Great. But all of my friends dated women in the nursing school. So I didn't roll with Ling Lang. That personal experience, Ling Lang. That's where the action is at. Literally, no one has ever said that, ever. Really? In the history of Georgetown? No one's ever said it legally? No, in human history. Oh, in human history? You know what? I did have, I will admit this, I did have a drunk hookup once with what I thought was a nursing student, but he was in the college. It was at the pub. Anything can happen at the pub. Is gout or shingles one of my choices? Yeah, you have a choice. I have a good gout story. Yeah, please. Of course. So, I played basketball against Andrew Yang recently. i went to new hampshire right i saw them went to new hampshire and played played we did an interview and then we were playing horse we played potus he beat me which is lame though i did beat him in one-on-one afterward and not important wasn't caught on camera um sure his guy his comms guy a guy named eric battles gout it made me think of you was he wearing the bracelet he's got not that i know but i did caution him i did caution him against intake of overly salty foods. Shellfish. Some people say alcohol. I say it's beer. That's the problem. Not alcohol. Gin and vodka is fine but whiskey. Clear spirits are good but it's the beer. Actually, many people say it's good for you. Yeah, they do. I've heard studies about that. And organ meats. And organ meats. Okay. JVL, I thought you handed this segment just fine. You were rather calm about it. No, wait.
JVL00:20:33Oh, please. I
Vic00:20:34have a Georgetown quiz for you.
JVL00:20:36Oh, this is terrific.
Vic00:20:37Victorino. Oh, and I have one more question for you, yes.
JVL00:20:41Can you describe for me where on the map...
Vic00:20:43Oh, for goodness sakes.
JVL00:20:46...Fennessy Hall is? Oh, my gosh. No. What? Can you describe for me where on the map the Fisher Athletic Center is?
Vic00:20:53Is this Johns Hopkins?
JVL00:20:55Can you tell me where the Jefferson Tree is and what the Jefferson Tree is named for?
Vic00:21:02I'm going to guess this is the school where Michael Bloomberg went.
JVL00:21:06Is that Michael Bloomberg's alma mater as alma mater? And I say, I'm shocked at your answers. These are all things that Georgetown visitation. Oh, wow. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.
Vic00:21:16No walk past busy. Walk past it. That's the most the girls high school. That's much the reason there's a giant brick wall. Okay. Now this is your, this is your big, this is your big chance. It was a brick wall and there's a cemetery. Okay. Um, Chris, uh, Mary Catherine hammer, Mike Warren. Well, no question, not even thinking about it, don't need to think about it, Mike Warren.
JVL00:21:39100%, right?
Vic00:21:40God. Didn't even, he didn't even, once you said Mike Warren, I didn't even have to hear anyone else. Mike Warren, what a guy. Love him. Handsome and talented. And very calm in his demeanor.
JVL00:21:53Yes, so we're back with calm.com. I had a, I, my, my girls, E, E, what do I call her? Well, whatever. Little E came in last night and had a new sleep story she wanted to listen to by Nick Offerman.
Vic00:22:11Oh, sure.
JVL00:22:12The one and only. Ron Swanson.
Guest00:22:13Hello there. My name is Nick Offerman. And tonight, I'd like to tell you a fine tale about a familiar storybook character. But before we get started, let's take a moment to get more comfortable.
JVL00:22:30So great.
Vic00:22:31Wait, is that real? Yeah. It's 100% real. Nick Offerman. Calm.com.
JVL00:22:35Oh, my gosh. It is a C-A-L-M.com. It is an app for your phone with guided meditations and breathing exercises and sleep stories. We use it in our house every single day. Nick Offerman, his story is The Big Bad Wolf Learns Anger Management. And it is somehow both charmingly funny and super-duper soothing. I couldn't tell you how it ends because I fell asleep while we were listening to it. But it was great. And this is what Calm does. They put my children to sleep for me. It is like a legal version of putting – what was it? Ether, right? On the rag that they use in Wonder Woman. For Linda Carter? No. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Yeah. I heard about something called chloroform. I don't know.
Vic00:23:23Chloroform, yes. Like giving your kids an allergy medicine before they go to the playground. I don't know why you're asking me.
JVL00:23:27I don't know why you're asking me. It's tremendous. Anyway, for a limited time, our listeners will get 25% off a Calm premium subscription at calm.com slash subbeacon. Vic00:23:59Thank you, JVL. You know what else is keeping me calmer? I'm cutting back on the caffeine because I can feel it. In the afternoon, if I have like the, oh, I just want even a half cap, it's going to set me off. You're drinking coffee right now. No, I consume four Venti green teas a day. And by Venti, I mean large, JVL.
JVL00:24:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Vic00:24:18It's Italian, so. I mean, I'm Italian. Chiliza. Chiliza. Yeah, of course. Chiliza, like pizza. Yeah. Okay. That's offensive.
JVL00:24:26So the green teas.
Vic00:24:28The green teas. Yeah, Emperor's Cloud Tea. It's a small startup company called Starbucks. They're doing some interesting stuff. So you don't need the caffeine.
JVL00:24:36You're just naturally. No, naturally. You have the green tea and cocaine. I don't. The thing is. It's only green tea and cocaine. That's all he needs to get through the day.
Vic00:24:44I mean, I'm so, I guess, enthusiastic about the movies. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
JVL00:24:52Yeah, I just. The simple fact of the matter is you love them.
Vic00:24:55Kurosawa. Oh, yeah. And speaking of which, the Irishman, the Operation Dumbo Drop. I mean, there's so many I celebrate. That's my caffeine in many ways. Operation Dumbo Drop. You guys know I love that movie. Was it Ray Liotta in that? Yeah. Okay, another great one. Okay, speaking of movies, over the weekend, Bad Boys for Life remained at the top of the box office with $34 million, followed by 1917 with $16 million, and in third place was Doolittle with $12 million, And in fourth place was Guy Ritchie's The Gentleman with $10.7 million. Box office thoughts. Chris, I do have a question for both of you that I actually find fascinating. And I didn't know that. I mean, I knew it inherently, but I didn't know the specifics of the box office. Doolittle. Yes. I'm fascinated by things that are pre-panned. By critics. Yes. Doolittle was one. It was in the cat's line. This is a terrible movie. Robert Downey Jr., this is a waste. And yet, now I don't know how much it cost. I mean, again, I have that knowledge, but I defer to you guys. I don't know. But it seems to me that it coming in third, I would have assumed it would have just disappeared. And I am always fascinated mostly because of Twitter and its bubble world and not real worldness. I'm always fascinated by things that are panned critically and then do okay like this. Or JVL is it that it is lost, you know, it cost $50 million to make and it's not going to make it back or whatever.
JVL00:26:40Well, it cost like $180 million.
Vic00:26:41Oh! I take back what I said.
JVL00:26:45It held – actually, it only declined 44%. Now, that's from a three-day weekend to a two-day weekend, and it was already so low that that's kind of a dead cat bounce. But its cumulative domestic total to date is about $44 million. So it will never come close to making it. No, because remember –
Vic00:27:08So critically panned then and then panned by audiences. Yeah.
JVL00:27:11This will be a $100 million write-down.
Vic00:27:14But maybe they make it up in international volume, foreign, foreign, not in China. Nobody's watching a movie there. The merch talking and was the critique that the animals talking was the bad part because I'm watching his dark materials and there is some weirdness with animals talking. Is it the talking animals or is it the downy performance that was panned? I'm going to say it's the nobody asked for a reboot of Dr. Doolittle. I think that's my speak for yourself.
JVL00:27:44I needed a Doctor Dolittle origin story
Vic00:27:46I was thinking we could possibly talk about The Gentleman this week I don't know if there's anybody else who has any thoughts on Guy Ritchie Do you know anybody else who might want to talk about Guy Ritchie? We could save that for a week I did another show Oh really? Wow, cheating
JVL00:28:02Over the weekend and where I did my top 10 of the decade list and there were two Guy Ritchie films on it
Vic00:28:12Was Snatch on it? Yes.
JVL00:28:14Snatch was not from the 2010s.
Vic00:28:15As you know, I'm a huge fan of Snatch. Oh, I know. I was testing you. Yes.
JVL00:28:20Yes. There's your Sub-Beacon quote of the week.
Vic00:28:25Snatch is an interesting film. Brad Pitt plays a boxer. No, he's really good. He can do accents. Yeah, he's terrific. I love that movie. I love him. I mean, you guys know that. He's a piker. The piker. The piker. Well, maybe we'll hold off on the gentleman. I'm sure there's a listener in Dallas who's just chomping at the bit. I feel like I'm right in the zeitgeist in that I am just finishing up, just watched last night, Revenge of the Sith. This is one of the newer Star Wars films that came out in the 2000s i believe uh so there's a lot of talk about rise of skywalker but i'm right there on revenge of the sith and so i am now through i didn't watch these movies at the time no which is weird because i am as i said a huge movie yeah but i didn't watch them at the time so i'm just now working through them with my two 10 and seven year old children they are um remarkably bad uh hey the choice of hayden christiansen as anakin is just and i know i and i it is inexplicable how badly he acts in these movies though i did think out of the three obviously these these are 10 years old but the three that i have just watched the prequels that one was pretty good relatively speaking yes although i did wander accidentally uh i tweeted out always a mistake by the way i tweeted out that it was odd that jar jar binks was appointed to fill a senate opening it happens and then i somebody sent me a link to this very deep rabbit hole of that Jar Jar Binks is actually a Sith Lord. Wow. And you ended up reading it going down. I mean, there's a lot there. Yeah, but he's just he's not not good. Are the next three better? Four, five and six? Not those. Seven, eight and nine. Are they any better? I'm going to watch him because my children are into it, but I just marginally I think seven is good. followed by nine and eight but they're both i think nine and eight are tied for bad in my opinion oh but you talk about revenge of the set the problem i have i have a lot of problems one of them is you know you talk about hayden christiansen and i do believe it's just the the script and the material he's given because i liked him in shattered glass you're right you're right that's the only other movie you've ever seen but we but we like we like him in that because that movie is so in our wheelhouse people are like oh did you like did you like broadcast news i mean Give me a break. Yes. Thank you. Okay. So, and then the other thing is, of course, when she dies giving birth. Despite the fact that they have hyperdrive capabilities. Faster than light speed. And the power to heal. Now that episode nine, they have the power to heal. And you know why it happened? The robotic midwife. You're blaming AI. You're blaming AI. It should have been a water birth. It should have been a birthing pool. I feel like this is an anti-Andrew Yang podcast. Kind of in a weird way. Don't like no automation. No, no automation for the midwife.
JVL00:32:49Putting out putting putting galactic doctors out of business.
Vic00:32:52The other piece that I didn't understand on which the entire series pivots is Mace Windu. By the way, spoiler alert from 20 years ago, Mace Windu and Palpatine slash Darsidious are fighting that in his apartment or whatever. Yes, it's his condo. And and yeah, he's got a beautiful kind of the HOA is going to be pissed off about his damage. Well, you don't make a window that big. You're going to have to personally cut that glass. I mean, you don't order that kind of size glass. Mace Windu is one, effectively. He's about to kill Sidious. Anakin steps in to save Padme, essentially, because Darth Sidious' dark forces are the only thing that can reverse death. He cuts off Windu's hand. Windu gets thrown out the window, whammo. He sits down. He says, oh, my God, what have I done? Literally one second later, he's bowing to Darth Sidious and say, I'll do anything that you want.
JVL00:33:53It feels like that conscience search didn't last very long. But he was so angry about the younglings. No, wait a minute. The little young sand people. I mean, so that one. And the, sorry, the Tufton Raiders that he massacred, not the sand people. That's a, that is a nasty, nasty slur. That would be like Gypsy versus Roma. You're soft.
Vic00:34:19Not like the coarse sand. Worst pick-up lines in history. Isn't there another movie you wanted to talk about, I think? Yes, Sucker Punch. Oh, yeah. You really love Sucker Punch, don't you? Well, I just think that it speaks to our moment. You know, it speaks to our moment. You don't see it coming. It knocks you flat. You can. You're always replaceable, you know? Yep. And I just think it's a I think it's it speaks to our time. You know, you step away for one minute and somebody else, somebody else punches you right in the face. Like, well, you're just you were a sucker all along is the thing, you know, you didn't know it. But the other two, I mean, it could be anyone, but the other two, I'll just pick a number. The other two are laughing at you all along, waiting for someone to come along and sucker punch you right in the back. of the head someone bigger stronger better looking way more successful thinner uh certainly better shape yeah smarter uh just better comes and punches you and knocks you i don't know again i'm speaking metaphorically knocks you all the way to texas and sits down in your chair that's right oh yeah eat your proverbial lunch so anyway i love that movie it's a favorite along with i think i'm saying it right it's all of gee richie's movies is it gee yeah gee like he's french yeah yeah yeah that's right that's right yeah that's right gee richie gee yeah he's great like the indian butter movies they're great am i right guys movies are on the as you know as the quadrant expert absolutely let me tell you you know there are great movies that are like they ace the quadrants uh i was talking about that movie gotcha the other day sure you know that one with um uh linda fiorentino and it's just aces all the quad i'll tell you a movie that fails all the quadrants 2001 a space odyssey um and that one let me just tell you well 1917 failure we bring out film i'm with JVL 2001 let me tell you that the plot gets an f right because what's happening there duration you're starting with like before the dawn of man f nudity except Except for the apes, F. And violence. I think there's more violence in Space Camp. I just, I was confused by it. It was hard, not really an obvious entry point for me. I looked at my phone most of the movie. I answered my phone a couple times, even though it came out before phones. Did you watch it on your phone?
JVL00:36:53Because that's the way to experience it.
Vic00:36:54Well, yeah, I like to watch. I don't really watch full movies. I'll watch, like, funny clips that people send me. I do that on YouTube. I do it on YouTube. Yeah.
JVL00:37:05The truth is you can get 85% of what you need to get from 2001 A Space Odyssey in YouTube clips on your phone.
Vic00:37:13Yeah, exactly. And then I don't have to pay anyone for it. Yeah. So that's a win-win. Huge. Okay, moving on. Corrections and shout-outs. This is real. This really happened. A shout-out to listeners, Liz and Shane Terrell from Gallup, New Mexico. They were in town the other week and wanted to come to the studio, so I gave them a grand tour. Kid you not, friends of a friend of the show, Ian Lindquist, they came to the studio. I let them sit in your very seats. Really? You're the seat where you always sit every week, Chris. Well, and this is a seat that you don't let other people sit in. Oh, no, no, no. It's irreplaceable. It's a piece of the show I am. Big deal. And then they took pictures. I even gave them a copy of the script, and I actually assigned copy of the script. Did you use a Sharpie? Handing out the lineup card. Sharpie? You didn't use, like, a Bic, did you? I know, I did my micro. Oh, the uniball. The uniball. Oh, that's good. The uniball. That's a nice man. The uniball. Okay. Well, that's all the time we're giving you this episode. Yeah, before Mike Warren. Mike Warren. I love Mike Warren. He's the best. He's the best. What do you guys think? Instead of saying, I'm sure it's fine, if we ended each show with congrats or something. That's a great idea. That is a great idea. I came up with that last night. You did? Yeah. I did. I just, I'm sure it's fine feels a little hackneyed, old, you know. I might play down south, but it's not the kind of thing here. Congrats.
JVL00:39:17Or something.
